It's currently the only ambient occlusion method to correctly approximate shadowing of distant, non-touching objects (like darkening the entire floor underneath a table, not just around the legs of the table, which is what other AO methods do). Voxel-based AO is the most physically-accurate method of ambient occlusion that exists today and one step closer to the ultimate goal of true global illumination. So I stole these screens (Thanks /u/badken !!) and turned them into GIFs to show the added benefits when compared to the next best method of AO, HBAO+.
